The Do’s and Don’ts

Top 7 Don’ts for Parents of attachment-challenged children:

1. Don’t take the child’s behavior personally.
2. Don’t get into blaming: social workers, school, spouse, yourself.
3. Don’t doubt yourself.
4. Don’t always accept the first diagnosis of your child’s problem.
5. Don’t give up hope of finding help/resources.
6. Don’t go beyond your limits, or take on too much.
7. Don’t believe that one person can’t do anything to make a difference…..

And the Do’s

1. Do understand that all your child’s negative behaviors stem from a place of fear.
2. Do be willing to examine and explore what YOU bring into this relationship.
3. Do become educated on alternatives, even if they seem “out of the box” for you.
4. Do find support, ask for help, and then allow it to comfort you.
5. Do keep a journal and write in it often in order to put words to your experience.
6. Do believe that you are worth unconditional love and that you are able to give it to others.
7. Do believe one person can make a lasting difference in the life of a child and in this world…
